Responsibilities

Perioperative Care Experts: RNs are heavily involved in the perioperative phase (before, during, and after surgery). This includes:

  • Pre-operative preparation: This involves comprehensive patient education about their specific procedure, discussing what to expect, wound care instructions, medication management, and potential risks. They gather detailed medical histories, perform physical assessments, obtain informed consent, and ensure all pre-operative tests are completed and reviewed.
  • Intraoperative assistance (if permitted and trained): While typically handled by surgical techs or specialized scrub nurses, some clinics may utilize RNs to assist the surgeon during procedures by anticipating needs, handling instruments, and ensuring a sterile field.
  • Post-operative care and monitoring: This is a major procedural responsibility. RNs closely monitor vital signs, assess for complications (e.g., bleeding, infection, adverse reactions to anesthesia), manage pain, and provide immediate post-operative wound care. They teach patients and their families about post-operative care at home, including medication schedules, activity restrictions, and signs of complications to watch for.
  • Documentation and Communication: A significant procedural aspect is meticulous documentation. RNs accurately record all patient interactions, assessments, procedures performed, medications administered, and any observed changes in a timely manner. They also facilitate crucial communication between the patient, surgeon, and other healthcare team members, ensuring a smooth flow of information and coordinated care.
In essence, the RN in a plastic surgery clinic executes a series of structured and critical tasks that directly impact patient safety, comfort, and the overall success of the cosmetic or reconstructive procedure. They are the frontline implementers of the care plan, requiring a high degree of technical skill, critical thinking, and compassionate communication.
