The posted compensation range of $29.38 - $43.70 /hour is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. CommonSpirit may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range as permitted by law.
Job Summary and Responsibilities
As our Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, you will assist Ophthalmologists and Optometrists by performing the clerical and clinical duties that keep their practices running smoothly day to day.
Every day you will perform Ophthalmic Assistant duties along with end-point refractions and higher-level ophthalmic testing, and you will handle the clerical tasks that help each clinic day run efficiently.
To be successful in this role, you will bring ophthalmic assistant certification and strong clinical skills in refraction and ophthalmic testing. You will be organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable balancing clinical and administrative responsibilities while providing a positive experience for every patient.
- Greets and rooms patient. Completes patient work-up, including collection of history and chart information such as chief complaint, medications, and allergies. Performs testing of vision and neutralizing of spectacles.
- May assist physician with in-office procedures, as appropriate and in accordance with incumbent’s training. Educates patients as necessary or requested. Provides patient counseling regarding proper use of medication. As needed, distributes approved pre- and post-op guidelines.
- Takes intraocular pressure by applanation or Tonopen, and performs refractometry. May perform additional tests including, but not limited to: A- or B-scan calculations, Visual Fields, Pachymetry, Corneal Topography, Heidelberg Retina Tomography (HRT) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
- Administers ocular medications as prescribed by the physician.
- Performs telephone triage to assess urgent versus emergent needs and creates schedules to meet the needs of the patient. Works with e-call physician’s teams to work in patients. Does general scheduling of patients and handling of phone messages.
- Restocks and cleans exam rooms after patient care. Conducts area sweeps during and at end of day, closes rooms at end of patient schedule.
- 1-3 years 1 year working in an optometry or ophthalmology practice, upon hire
- Certified Opthalmic Technician, upon hire or
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, upon hire
