Job Summary and Responsibilities

Job Summary: 

In keeping with Marian Medical Center health care philosophy, the Unit Clerk/Nurse Assistant/ Monitor Observer observes and recognizes cardiac rhythms and proper operation of monitoring equipment. Notifies Registered Nurse of changes in cardiac rhythm, patient status and improperly functioning equipment. Serves as unit receptionist, orders tests, orders and monitors supply inventory, and coordinates unit phone communication. Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse, performs assigned care, assists patients with activities of daily living, provides comfort measures, and performs unit support activities, such as transporting patients, stocking shelves and cleaning work areas. Maintains medical record according to Standard. In addition to listed major responsibilities, the Unit Clerk/Nurse Assistant/ Monitor Observer may be assigned other duties. Unit Clerk/Nurse Assistant/ Monitor Observer are responsible for completion of unit competency assessments, annual Safety Review, CPR and renewal of certification (when applicable) by maintaining continuing education units as required by hospital policy.

Job Details: 

  • Prepares patient rooms and beds prior to patient arrival for receiving patient admissions, returning surgical patients, and transfers.

  • Provides patients with assistance in changing into hospital gown, orients patient to unit, and obtains and records vital signs, height and weight. Coordinates and prepares patient valuables and personal belongings for admissions, transfer, and discharge; directly relays necessary information to admitting RN.

  • Provides care to assigned patients including oral, skin, hair, clipping, bath, making gurneys as patient needs indicate.

  • Provides assistance with toileting or incontinent care.

  • Sets up patients for meals, assists with meals if needed, or feeds patients if necessary in a timely manner consistent with patient needs.

  • Distributes drinking water and other nourishment.


Job Requirements

Required:

  • Completion of unit clerk class or equivalent work experience.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant: CA (CNA:CA)
  • Basic Life Support - CPR (BLS-CPR)
  • Successful completion of MMC Monitor Observer exam
  • Annual Monitor Observer Recertification exam.


Preferred:

  • Previous nurse assistant unit clerk experience.
  • Acute care experience within the last two years.
  • Nurse assistants/unit clerks without acute care experience within the last two years will be considered on an individual basis.
