Job Summary:
The Obstetrics (OB) and Newborn Nursery Registered Nurse (RN) is a vital member of the healthcare team, responsible for providing comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to pregnant and postpartum patients, as well as their newborns. This role encompasses direct patient care, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing interventions in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The OB/Newborn Nursery RN promotes safe, positive, and supportive experiences for families during childbirth and the crucial postpartum period, fostering optimal maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Job Responsibilities:
- Patient Assessment & Monitoring: Conduct thorough assessments of postpartum patients, including vital signs, uterine assessments, fundal height, lochia, perineal integrity, pain levels, and emotional status. Monitor for signs of potential complications (e.g., hemorrhage, infection, preeclampsia).
- Postpartum Care & Education: Provide direct nursing care to postpartum patients, including medication administration, wound care (cesarean section incisions, episiotomies), and catheter care. Educate mothers on self-care, pain management, perineal hygiene, and warning signs to report.
- Breastfeeding/Lactation Support: Provide comprehensive education, support, and assistance to mothers regarding breastfeeding techniques, latch assessment, milk supply management, and common breastfeeding challenges. Refer to lactation consultants as needed.
- Discharge Planning & Education: Collaborate with patients and families to develop individualized discharge plans. Provide thorough discharge instructions regarding maternal self-care, newborn care, warning signs, follow-up appointments, and community resources.
- Pain Management: Assess and manage maternal pain effectively using pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
- Emotional Support: Provide empathetic emotional support to new mothers, addressing concerns related to body image, fatigue, and the transition to parenthood. Identify and refer patients at risk for postpartum depression/anxiety.
Qualifications
Minimum:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
AZ RN license
American Heart Association BLS certification
NRP
Preferred:
BSN
Professional certification in area of specialty
One year recent acute care experience
