Job Summary and Responsibilities

Are you called to serve others with compassion, empathy, and spiritual wisdom? CHI St. Joseph's Health is seeking a dedicated and sensitive Spiritual Care Giver to join our interdisciplinary team. In this vital role, you will provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, their families, and staff, offering comfort, guidance, and presence during times of illness, crisis, and loss. You will embody our mission by respecting diverse spiritual paths and offering care that is inclusive, non-judgmental, and deeply human.

What You'll Do:

  • Provide Direct Spiritual Care: Offer one-on-one and group spiritual support to patients and their families, addressing their spiritual, emotional, and existential needs. This includes active listening, prayer (if requested), scripture reading (if desired, from various traditions), offering sacraments (if authorized and appropriate for your tradition), and facilitating spiritual rituals.
  • Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate spiritual and emotional support to patients and families experiencing grief, trauma, end-of-life transitions, or other acute crises.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work collaboratively with nurses, physicians, social workers, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic patient care, participating in care conferences and communicating patient spiritual needs effectively.
  • Spiritual Assessment: Conduct spiritual assessments to identify patient strengths, spiritual coping mechanisms, and areas of spiritual distress.
  • Resource and Referral: Connect patients and families with appropriate spiritual and community resources, both within and outside the hospital.
  • Ethical Support: Provide spiritual and ethical consultation and support to patients, families, and staff facing difficult medical decisions.
  • Staff Support: Offer spiritual and emotional support to hospital staff facing professional and personal challenges, promoting resilience and well-being.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of spiritual care interventions in patient records.
  • Pastoral Presence: Participate in hospital events, ceremonies, and services as appropriate, fostering a compassionate and healing environment.
  • Continuing Education: Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance spiritual care skills and knowledge.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree 
  • Board Certified Chaplain BCC (BCC-BCC)
