Responsibilities
The INTAKE COUNSELOR is responsible for a variety of tasks that lead to a high level of customer satisfaction in the most cost-effective manner. Must have good phone skills and able to work in a fast paced environment. The Intake Counselor screens callers contacting Dignity Health NHMC Behavioral Health via phone for possible admission, or referral to community resources. Coordinates admissions to inpatient services.
  • Processes telephone inquiries by screening calls for needed intensity of service and caller's insurance coverage.
    Coordinates clinical assessments performed by Crisis Team or psychiatrists, admissions and referrals to appropriate community resources.
  • For inpatient admissions the counselor acts as a liaison with the physician, insurance company, business office, U.R. and unit staff.
  • Maintains good communication with community agencies that refer patients to the Call center.  Contributes to the ongoing development of new referral sources.
  • Maintains effective communication with, and serves as liaison between patient, families, program staff, doctors, Crisis Team and community resources.
  • Generates daily reports for Case Management, social service, physicians, and PHP.
  • Assists manager in providing monthly statistical reports on call volume, admission dates, Crisis Team data and referral source activity to determine system effectiveness and marketing strategies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications
  • Minimum two years healthcare experience required.
  • Experience in mental health or addiction medicine setting preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social service, counseling or a related field preferred.
  • AS 400, Teletracker, E-Verify, Excel spreadsheets.
  • Fire Card (within 90 days of hire) required.

This position is represented by SEIU UHW and is covered by the terms and conditions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
