Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Phlebotomist, you will play a vital role in determining patient diagnoses and treatment by expertly performing blood collection and specimen processing, ensuring the highest level of patient care.

Every day you will expertly obtain and process blood specimens via capillary or venipuncture, ensuring integrity, proper disposal, and timely distribution to testing areas with special instructions, all while performing clerical duties and prioritizing patient comfort.

To be successful in this role, you will possess the precise clinical skills for blood collection and specimen handling, coupled with a genuine passion for helping others. You will demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational abilities, and a special talent for making patients feel comfortable during blood work, while adhering to lab collection turnaround times.

  • Performs all work in accordance with Laboratory Policy and Procedure.
  • Wears protective clothing and equipment when handling clinical specimens as prescribed in the Laboratory Safety Manual.
  • Be thoroughly familiar with Universal precautions, the Laboratory Hazard Communication Program, and the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Perform the following duties routinely: a. Identify accurately each patient and label lab specimens correctly 100% of the time. b. Perform venipunctures and capillary punctures on inpatients and outpatients in a pleasant and courteous manner, as outlined in the Phlebotomy Procedure Manual. c. Identify and label accurately patients for Transfusion Service specimens 100% of the time. d. Respond appropriately to STAT, ASAP, and Timed lab requests. e. Process specimens for testing in the Laboratory and for reference testing. f. Clean working areas with 10% bleach and restock supplies at least once each shift. g. Inventory and maintain Phlebotomy supplies. h. Chart accurately patient reports. i. Order patient tests accurately and efficiently in the LIS. j. Print patient reports accurately and efficiently. k. Answer all incoming telephone calls in a courteous and efficient manner. l. Place and receive promptly facsimile transmissions. m. Monitor and record temperatures of temperature controlled equipment. n. Monitor and record D.I. water system checks. o. Perform blood component inventory and exchange. p. Pick up and transport pre-surgical and surgical specimens from the OR in a timely manner. q. Receive, time stamp when applicable, and process specimens. r. Set up Microbiology specimens for culture and prepare smears as outlined in the Microbiology Procedure Manual. s. Perform blood component sign-out as outlined in the Transfusion Services Procedure Manual. t. Assist in the orientation of trainees. u. Perform duties of the Laboratory Secretary as needed. v. Assist in general cleaning of the Laboratory.
  • Attend meetings and/or workshops as needed.

Required

  • Completed phlebotomy certification training. New graduate okay
  • Phlebotomist: CA

Preferred

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • One year of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory
