Telephone Operator
The posted compensation range of $24.00 - $25.30 /hour is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. CommonSpirit may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range as permitted by law.
Responsibilities
Responsible for the operation of multiple phone line telephone console and related functions.
- Operate a telephone console.
- Greet every caller with professionalism and with Hospital and operator's name. Make prompt and courteous replies to incoming calls. Give general information and direction to callers by phone.
- Determine, through inquiry, the proper extension with which the call is to be connected and make the proper connection. Route and receive messages. Page and relay messages using pagers and public address systems and portable pagers.
- Monitor current patient roster and computer terminal. Maintain updated list of phone numbers as required.
- Monitor fire alarm panel.
Keep updated on meetings, conferences and their location within the hospital complex.
Receive and respond with accuracy, speed and decisiveness to internal emergency calls (codes), monitor and respond to fire alarms and smoke detectors.
Report telephone malfunction to the appropriate department.
Maintain a cooperative working atmosphere by performing other related duties as required.
Assign pagers as needed and document required information onto pager log.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Two (2) years of recent experience of a telephone console system preferably in a hospital environment.
Preferred:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Demonstrated both written and verbal communication skills.
