Job Summary and Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose:


Under the direction of the CHI Saint Joseph Health Cancer Center Supervisor/Manager, the
Oncology Clinic Nurse provides comprehensive cancer care to patients through the
continuum of cancer care providing antineoplastic education, interpretation, and emotional
support, for oncology patients and their caregivers.


Essential Key Job Responsibilities:


● Demonstrates understanding and adherence to the National Patient Safety Goals.
Executes responsibilities with fiscal prudence, actively engaging in performance
improvement initiatives, including quality enhancement and patient safety
endeavors. Contributes to sustained compliance with JCAHO accreditation and other
pertinent internal and external regulatory benchmarks, encompassing the code of
conduct.
● Functions within a multidisciplinary team to deliver age-appropriate care in the
capacity of a Registered Nurse. Undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned,
contingent upon demonstrated competency and within the parameters of the
professional scope of practice.
● Completes all hospital education and web-based competencies as assigned.
● Able to work autonomously conducting basic nursing assessments. Functions using
the latest evidence bases practice. Obtains relevant information regarding treatment
and any associated side effects. Provides appropriate recommendations based on
oncology expertise, established policies and procedures, physician-directed protocols,
individual and family preferences, and interdisciplinary team communication. Procures necessary orders and meticulously records patient assessments, recommendations, and patient education within the medical record.
● Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of antineoplastic treatment regimens
and the medications utilized in the care of these intricate patient cases. Proficient in
the applications, adverse effects, and management/administration protocols
associated with antineoplastic regimens.
● Demonstrates proficiency in patient care, encompassing specialized oncology
procedures such as therapeutic phlebotomy, management of hypersensitivity
reactions, anaphylaxis, oncologic emergencies, pleural or peritoneal drainage, and
adherence to neutropenic precautions.
● Demonstrates proficiency in establishing and maintaining venous access, both
peripherally and via central line.
● Performs basic nursing skills when applicable (injections, IV, urinary catheter, trach
care).
● Delivers comprehensive and site-specific educational resources and materials to
patients and their families, adapting teaching methodologies to accommodate
individual educational and learning limitations. All educational interventions are
meticulously documented within the medical record. Offers extensive emotional
support to patients and families throughout the treatment continuum, with particularemphasis on addressing the unique challenges and needs of critically ill oncology patients. Provides counseling and care to patients across the lifespan within
emotionally intense contexts, necessitating a high degree of clinical and
psychological nursing expertise.
● Participates in assigned committees to maintain accreditation standards, quality
improvement, and patient centered care.
● Engages in continuous professional development, as evidenced by but not limited to
maintaining a current chemotherapy/biotherapy provider certification, pursuing
professional certification in oncology, completing the professional development
program, acquiring additional oncology-related contact hours, affiliating with a
professional nursing organization, cross-training within various cancer center
departments, or participating in health-related community and cancer center
initiatives.
● Successful completion of annual RN skills training and competencies is required. The
initial ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Card must be obtained within 90 days
of employment, and active status must be maintained thereafter.
● National Oncology Certification is recommended when eligible, but it is not
mandatory for this position.
● Other duties as assigned by management.

Required Licensure and

Current RN license to practice in the state
of Kentucky


Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills
and Abilities:

ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider
Card within 90 days of hire and maintained
thereafter.


PREFERRED Qualifications:


Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Oncology experience is recommended but
not required.
National Oncology Certification (OCN or
equivalent)
