Responsibilities
A Patient Care Technician (PCT) at a hospital provides essential support to healthcare teams by assisting with patient care tasks, ensuring patient comfort, and maintaining a safe and clean environment. Key responsibilities include taking vital signs, monitoring patients’ physical and emotional well-being, assisting with daily activities such as bathing and dressing, and helping to transport patients within the facility. The PCT also assists nurses and physicians with medical procedures, maintains patient records, and ensures that equipment is properly sanitized. This role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, compassionate environment.
- Check-in with the outgoing patient care techs at the beginning of your shift to get a report on your patients.
- Conduct hourly rounds on patients, checking vitals, maintaining whiteboard information, and assisting with care as needed.
- Assist patients with ambulating as necessary. This may mean helping them reach a recliner in their room, walk to the bathroom, or down the hall. Assist released patients in getting safely to their vehicles outside.
- Assist patients with hygiene needs. This can include a full bed bath, an assisted bed bath, or retrieving towels and soap for ambulatory patients.
- Help the nurse with tube insertions such as an NG tube, rectal tube, or catheter. You may be holding a cup of water, holding the patient or providing the nurse with supplies as needed, and cleaning up after.
- Change bed linens, check patients’ weight, other tasks as assigned each day.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Completion of nursing assistant program, or EMT program, or completion of first block of nursing program
- Arizona EMT or Arizona CNA/LNA license
- American Heart Association-issued BLS card
