Job Summary / Purpose
The Director of Nursing for Labor and Delivery (L&D) is a visionary and strategic nursing leader responsible for the overall operational, clinical, and administrative management of the Labor and Delivery unit. This role encompasses ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and patient-centered maternal and newborn care, fostering a culture of excellence, and optimizing unit performance. The Director of L&D is a champion for clinical best practices, staff development, patient satisfaction, and financial stewardship within the L&D department.
Essential Functions:
Clinical Leadership & Quality Assurance:
- Patient Care Excellence: Ensures the provision of compassionate, evidence-based, and patient-centered care for laboring mothers, newborns, and their families.
- Clinical Standards: Establishes, implements, and monitors adherence to professional nursing standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements (e.g., AWHONN, Joint Commission, state health departments).
- Quality Improvement: Leads and participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives, including identifying areas for improvement, developing action plans, and monitoring outcomes related to patient safety, clinical efficacy, and satisfaction.
- Risk Management: Proactively identifies and mitigates risks within the L&D unit, ensuring a safe environment for patients and staff. Investigates and responds to patient safety events and complaints.
Operational & Administrative Management:
- Strategic Planning: Contributes to the development and execution of departmental and organizational strategic plans, aligning L&D goals with overall organizational objectives.
- Budget Management: Develops, manages, and adheres to the annual operating and capital budgets for the L&D unit, identifying opportunities for cost savings and resource optimization.
Human Resources & Staff Development:
- Professional Development: Promotes a culture of continuous learning and professional growth, facilitating access to educational opportunities, certifications, and leadership development programs for L&D staff.
- Employee Engagement: Fosters a positive and supportive work environment that promotes teamwork, respect, and high employee morale.
Job Requirements
Minimum:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors Of Nursing (e.g. BSN) or equivalent education and experience and
- Masters Of Nursing or other-related field (e.g., MSN/MBA/MHA).
- Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience and
- Two (2) years of leadership experience.
Licensure and Certifications:
- Registered Nurse: AZ (RN:AZ)
- American Heart Association BLS
