Job Summary and Responsibilities

The Market Chief Medical Officer (MCMO) is a senior physician executive responsible for advancing clinical excellence, physician engagement, and strategic alignment across both the hospital and market levels. Serving as the local Hospital Chief Medical Officer (HCMO) while also supporting broader market initiatives, this leader partners closely with hospital executives, physicians, and operational leaders to improve quality, patient safety, patient experience, and overall clinical performance.

The MCMO reports directly to the Hospital President/CEO for local responsibilities and maintains a dotted-line relationship to the Regional Chief Medical Officer (RCMO) and Market President for market-level priorities. In partnership with the Market Chief Nurse Executive (MCNE), this role serves as a key clinical leadership partner driving strategic initiatives, operational alignment, regulatory readiness, and physician engagement across the market.

This is a highly visible role for a physician leader who thrives in collaborative environments, values relationship-building, and is passionate about improving care delivery, advancing operational excellence, and leading meaningful change across a dynamic healthcare market.

Key Responsibilities

• Provides executive leadership for quality, patient safety, patient experience, physician engagement, utilization management, clinical efficiency, and medical staff relationships
• Serves as a key liaison between the Regional Chief Medical Officer (RCMO) and Hospital CMOs across the market, ensuring alignment around strategic and clinical priorities
• Partners with market and hospital leadership to advance clinical excellence, standardization, regulatory readiness, and performance improvement initiatives
• Monitors clinical performance across the market and supports facilities in achieving operational and quality goals
• Supports physician engagement, physician well-being, recruitment, and leadership development initiatives across the market
• Collaborates with the Market President and executive leadership team to strengthen market growth, strategic positioning, and physician network development
• Partners with Physician Enterprise leaders to support integration efforts and expansion of ambulatory and non-acute services

• Reports directly to the Hospital President/CEO for local hospital responsibilities
• Maintains a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Regional Chief Medical Officer (RCMO) and Market President for market-level initiatives
• Partners closely with the Market Chief Nurse Executive (MCNE) in a dyad leadership model supporting clinical strategy, quality outcomes, and operational alignment across the market

Job Requirements

Required Education & Experience
• Minimum of 5 years of clinical medical practice experience
• Minimum of 5 years of Hospital Chief Medical Officer (HCMO) experience or experience in a comparable senior physician leadership role

Preferred Education & Experience
• Advanced degree in business, healthcare administration, medical management, or a related field preferred

Licensure & Certifications
• Active and unrestricted medical license in the applicable state
• Board Certification through the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPAS)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and change management skills
• Proven ability to influence physicians, executives, and interdisciplinary leaders
• Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, compassion, and humankindness
• Strategic mindset with the ability to lead through complexity and organizational change
