The posted compensation range of $40.66 - $58.96 /hour is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. Job Details
As our Director of Nursing at CHI St. Alexius Health Devils Lake, now part of CommonSpirit Health formed between Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health, you’ll oversee our MSP, OB, ER, OR, and Cardiac Rehab frontline nurses, and act as the conduit between these caregivers and leadership teams. You will communicate the organization’s goals to the nursing staff as we constantly seek to improve patient experiences, reach out to our community, and deliver quality care. At the same time, you will advocate for your team by bringing any issues, requests, or new ideas from them to leadership. You'll demonstrate your experience and knowledge of The Joint Commission (TJC) governing boards and CMS Critical Access COPs and other regulatory agency standards as required e.g.: Midas software or ability to acclimate to new software for reporting purposes.
As our DON, you'll provide overall clinical administrative direction to services located in the hospital in accordance with the purpose and values of the organization. This position is held accountable for the quality, safety, and patient satisfaction working as a team with the individual nursing departments. Your ability to manage multiple priorities and demonstrate effective communication skills during difficult/sensitive discussions tactfully; discuss required improvement plans to direct reports in a timely and professional manner which leads to improved results and behavior is vital to this position.
You'll excel in this role by utilizing your established leadership skills including coaching and mentoring best practices; contribute to a recruiting and retention plan that contributes to adequate staffing which allows the best outcomes to the communities Devils Lake serves and have the ability to manage multiple priorities in addition to utilizing your attention to detail.

About Us:
CHI St. Alexius Health Devils Lake Hospital is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital accredited by The Joint Commission licensed by the North Dakota State Department of Health and certified by the Department of Health and Human Services for participation in the Medicare Program. Our hospital has been committed to providing patients quality medical treatment in the Lake Region area and surrounding communities since 1902.
Responsibilities
- Oversee a department of nurses, ensuring everyone has what they need to deliver the best care possible to our patients.
- Engage with the floor. Talk to the nurses, the patients, and families. Keep your finger on the pulse of your department so you can keep things running smoothly.
- Attend meetings with leadership to learn about new initiatives, budgetary status, areas for improvement, etc., and bring this information back to your team of nurses.
- Monitor attendance among nursing staff, watching for any patterns of missed shifts which may need addressing.
- Monitor productivity and efficiency of your department, including budgets. We want to achieve the best throughput while never compromising on care.
- Mentor people on your team. Share your knowledge and confidence with assistant nurse managers, charge nurses, and others. Build them into potential nurse managers like yourself.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with minimum seven (7) years of experience in the discipline or five (5) years of leadership experience.
- Active Registered Nurse License in the state of North Dakota or compact license that allows practice in North Dakota.
- Basic Life Support (BLS).
Preferred:
- Experience working in a Critical Access Hospital.
- ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC preferred.
