Histology Technician
The posted compensation range of $23.69 - $35.24 /hour is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. CommonSpirit may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range as permitted by law.
Job Summary and Responsibilities
Full time- 2nd Shift
Supports the mission and vision of CHI Health by preparing patient samples for the examination and histopathological diagnosis of disease states and other abnormalities by Pathologists and Pathology Residents.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
- Receives, accessions as required, and prepares tissues and other biological materials using accepted histological techniques; performs proper labeling, fixation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping
- Prepares and evaluates stains, reagents, and solutions necessary for slide preparation following established policies and procedures.
- Performs quality control, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting of instruments and stains for optimal performance.
- Follows all CAP and regulatory guidelines, demonstrating consistent adherence to national patient safety goals.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
Histotechnician must satisfy one of the following:
1. Successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician progam.
2. High School diploma and at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) hours of credit from a college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (8 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both) or an associate degree from a college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last 5 years in all of the following areas: fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing, and staining.
Will consider candidates with High School diploma and ten or more years of experience in all areas of routine histology in lieu of academic credit/degree and/or certification.
Registered or registry eligible as a Histotechnician, HT(ASCP).
Fine motor coordination, good visual acuity including color discrimination, working knowledge of basic chemistry, and attention to detail.
