Responsibilities

The Chaplain ministers to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients their families and staff.  As members of the care team they participate in and advocate for the healing process of the whole person.  Identifies and responds to referrals and serves as a liaison between patients/families and professional hospital staff to address spiritual needs and ethical concerns.  Works with Mission Leader to integrate spirituality of work throughout organization.  The Chaplain role encompasses competence and integration of knowledge and skill as caregiver leader and educator within the realm of spiritual care healthcare ethics and integration of mission and core values.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains regular rounds on assigned units to identify and assess spiritual care needs and goals for the plan of care/follow-up care plan/spiritual discharge panning.
  • Identifies and responds to ethical needs of patients families and staff assuring appropriate referral to Ethics Consult Service when needed while maintaining pastoral role and participation as Chaplain.
  • Serves as support person and/or contact for family members during their stay in waiting areas during surgeries and other acute crisis situations.
  • Receives referrals for spiritual care and communicates appropriate spiritual assessment plan and intervention to staff verbally and through documentation within the patient’s electronic medical record for import to patient care care decisions and care planning.
  • Responds to emergency calls in order to assist patients families and staff confronting crisis situations providing spiritual support advocacy and follow-up as needed.
  • Provides opportunities for prayer with patients families and staff based upon assessment and as integral to the holistic approach to healing ministry.
  • Assists in facilitating visits by clergy and health ministers with members of their faith community and networks for spiritual support during hospitalization and post discharge.
  • Makes sacraments available according to established policy and procedure and provides leadership for liturgical services within health system.
  • Provides education and assistance to patients families and staff in regard to formulating and understanding Advance Directives while serving as an advocate for honoring patient wishes.
  • Provides support comfort advocacy practical assistance and spiritual expertise to patients family and staff in End of Life situations.
  • Works with the Vice President of Mission Integration and with various programs processes and initiatives to help integrate the Mission and Values within the workplace and culture.
  • Serves in the role of Chaplain in all areas and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree as required for Chaplain Board Certification

Chaplain Board Certification (APC-BCCI NACC NAJC); Board Certification eligible candidates considered with two year BCC completion plan; Completion of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education; Ecclesial Endorsement.

Working knowledge of healthcare ethics commitment to Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare and maintenance of Board Certification
