Job Summary and Responsibilities

Are you a highly experienced Registered Nurse with a passion for patient safety, quality improvement, and proactive risk mitigation? Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) is seeking a dynamic and dedicated professional to lead our Risk Management Program. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in strengthening our risk profiles, preventing losses, and enhancing the safety and quality of care delivered across our facilities.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

As the RN Manager, Program Risk Management, you will leverage your clinical expertise and risk management acumen to drive comprehensive initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes and resource utilization. You will be a key leader in fostering a culture of safety, working both proactively to prevent issues and reactively to manage potential liabilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Risk Management Leadership:

Manage the comprehensive risk management function for the Northwest Region, focusing on strengthening risk profiles.
Proactively work to prevent situations that can result in losses or liability, and improve safety, utilization of resources, and achievement of desired outcomes.

Performance Improvement & Collaboration:

Collaborate extensively with clinical service lines to lead and implement performance improvement projects and initiatives specifically related to risk management.

Oversee and provide expert support, guidance, and training to various management-level work teams in:
The application of accepted clinical quality improvement methodologies and tools.
Data collection and sophisticated statistical/operational analysis.
Robust risk assessment and outcomes measurement strategies.
Research and implementation of best practices.
Documenting and implementing effective process improvements.
Evaluating the desired vs. actual clinical effectiveness of performance improvement efforts.

Litigation Support:

Provide essential litigation support to the Northwest Region Legal Counsel, including thorough chart review and discovery processes, ensuring accurate and timely information.

Clinical Expertise & Standard of Care:

Utilize strong clinical nursing expertise to review nursing and provider documentation.
Analyze diligently whether the Standard of Care was met, facilitating effective risk control, loss mitigation, and claims management strategies.

Data-Driven Decision Making:

Apply considerable knowledge of risk/quality improvement concepts, methodologies, and tools.
Champion the importance of data (e.g., establishing baseline, providing objective measurement, determining the degree of the problem, showing variation/causes of variation, identifying root causes, developing appropriate solutions, etc.) to drive robust performance improvement processes.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Clinical Acumen: Demonstrated strong clinical nursing expertise with a deep understanding of patient care standards, practices, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Risk & Quality Improvement Expert: Extensive knowledge of risk/quality improvement concepts, methodologies, and tools, with a proven ability to leverage data for performance enhancement.

Analytical & Critical Thinker: Exceptional judgment, analytical ability, and problem-solving skills to navigate complex data and high-stakes situations.

Leadership & Collaboration: Proven ability to lead and support work teams, collaborate effectively with diverse clinical service lines, and influence positive change.

Regulatory Knowledge: Solid understanding of healthcare regulations relevant to patient care and risk management.

Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate complex issues clearly and effectively to all levels of the organization and external counsel.


Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in health administration, nursing, business administration or related field and graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum of six years of progressively responsible related work experience (hospital/healthcare risk management) that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities.

  • Three years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • An equivalent combination of additional qualifying work experience and education that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities may be substituted for the degree requirement.
  • Active Washington State Registered Nurse License required.

Preferred:

  • Certified Professional in Healthcare In Risk Mgmt (CPHRM)
