Job Summary and Responsibilities

The Medical Director of Physician Engagement leads the development and execution of strategies to engage physicians and APPs, driving new business, network expansion, and improvements in population health, health equity, and integrated care. This role acts as a key liaison, fostering relationships with providers across various markets to advance critical business and clinical initiatives.

The Director oversees physician/APP engagement and provider relations teams, ensuring effective network education, communication, issue resolution, and expansion. They collaborate with Network Management and Contracting to strengthen provider relationships and work with Clinical Analytics, Clinical Strategy, and Quality Management to develop member health programs. Additionally, they partner with health plan leadership to explore innovative community health initiatives.

Key responsibilities include implementing and overseeing clinical initiatives alongside executive leadership, mentoring provider relations teams, and resolving provider issues. The role ensures consistent provider interactions with Managed Care operations and plays a vital part in new business development, including recruitment and training of clinical staff. This individual supports quality improvement efforts, analyzes provider KPIs, and contributes to the strategy for the national Population Health Services Organization (PHSO), including various healthcare technology systems. They also provide backup support for utilization management activities. The Director ensures care solutions align with best practices and the organization's mission, collaborating broadly to achieve shared goals.

***This position will be hybrid work from home (within California) and in-clinic, requiring up to 50% travel to provider offices, primarily in the Bakersfield/Central CA region.


Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:


- Minimum 7 years experience practicing medicine as a physician within a managed care setting
- Minimum 5 years experience in a value-based provider group or managed care setting
- Minimum 2 years experience in medical administration, preferably with an IPA
- Current MD/DO license to practice medicine within the State of California; Board Certification is required, preferably in a primary care specialty
- Management / leadership experience in healthcare setting
- Knowledge of clinical standards of care, NCQA requirements, CMS guidelines, and Medicaid / Medicare programs and dual eligible populations, and benefit systems is preferred.
- HEDIS/Stars and HCC/Risk adjustment knowledge.
