Overview

Saint Joseph Hospital is a 433-bed facility located in Lexington Kentucky. Founded in 1877 a small group of Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Kentucky led by Sister Euphrasia Stafford began their health ministry. Their mission was to provide compassionate care to the poor and underserved – a tradition still carried out today. Saint Joseph Hospital primarily serves central and eastern Kentucky with a full range of services including distinguished awards for cardiology orthopedics and stroke care. Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose

Performs blood collection and specimen processing. Assist with clerical duties as requested. Maintains laboratory collection turnaround time. Performs specimen processing.

Preferred:  Phlebotomy Certificate

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Practices positive patient identification at all times, in all job functions.
  2. Practices HumanKindness and courtesy with all patient and co-worker interactions.
  3. Compliance with isolation and hand sanitization procedures.
  4. Follows blood collection procedures, performs venous and capillary punctures on all age groups of inpatient and outpatient populations. Utilizes appropriate collection techniques to obtain quality samples and adheres to appropriate volume requirements. 
  5. Performs Blood Bank collections. Follows written collection and Blood Bank banding procedures. Demonstrates accuracy and good penmanship. Adheres to specimen requirements.
  6. Maintains order and cleanliness of phlebotomy trays, stations and storage rooms.
  7. Maintains laboratory turnaround time, prioritizes work activities. Organizes draw requests to assure efficiency and turnaround time requirements are met.
  8. Specimen processing/intake and distribution to testing areas of the laboratory.
  9. Uses good judgment when problem solving and requests help when needed.
  10. Takes responsibility for the department workflow, assists all members of the team to maintain department workflow and efficiency. Creates an atmosphere by manner, work and deed that fosters teamwork and collaboration.
